After a gap of one year MTC is going to restart the operations of AC buses. The last AC bus run on the month of Sep 2018.
“Around 50 new red buses will be added to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s fleet,” said transport minister M R Vijayabaskar.
These will be flagged off alongside 180 new ordinary buses, earmarked for MTC, later this year.
Besides, 50 more airconditioned buses will be provided to Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Villupuram, and other corporations in Madurai, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam, Tirunelveli and Salem will receive 10 airconditioned buses each, said transport department sources.
Bodies for these buses are being built at units in Karur, a source said.
In Chennai, the 50 buses will be operated along routes on which Volvo buses were earlier operated. Of the 100 Volvo buses, the last bus was condemned in November 2018, the source added.
This indicates that they will ply in south Chennai, particularly on the IT corridor on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Grand Southern Trunk Road along Tambaram.
However, no area will be left out as services will be altered depending on demand, said an MTC official.
Besides, the city is all set to get Tamil Nadu’s first long-distance electric bus named ‘Green bus’.
These buses can run up to 250km in one go when their batteries are fully charged. The bus which is operated on route A1 (Thiruvanmiyur-Chennai Central) can cover short distances and is suited only for town service.
However, the green bus can function as mofussil service, the MTC official added.
