It is an important city in this district for official and commercial purposes. Its nickname was Sivagangai Seemai.The city is located at a distance of 48 km (30 mi) from Madurai and 449 km (279 mi) from the state capital Chennai.

The bus service will depart from Sivangaga at 8:00 pm and arrive in Chennai next day morning at 5:00 am. The fare for the service is fixed at Rs.463, covering a distance of 454 kilometers in 9 hours and 30 minutes.
