Chennai – Viluppuram RRTS – Regional Rapid Transit System – Proposed

State Government has proposed a Regional Rapid Transit System known as RRTS from Chennai to Viluppuram, the proposed system will have the major station at Kilambakkam connecting the Kilambakkam Bus Stand.

The primary goal for the corridor is cut short the current 3.5 hours – 4 hours travel by approximately 1 hour. The proposed Regional Rapid Transit System will be operated at a max speed of 160 km/hr.

The estimated cost of the project is 75000 Crore, present status of the project as early on 2026, the feasibility study is completed. The project is at present in planning stage and awaiting approval from Government for detail project report.

Proposed Route & Stops

The line is planned to start in the city and run south, effectively acting as a high-speed parallel to the existing suburban beach-Chengalpattu line.

  1. Alandur (Start/Interchange with Metro)

  2. Chennai Airport

  3. Tambaram

  4. Kilambakkam (KCBT)Critical interchange for bus passengers.

  5. Chengalpattu

  6. Madurantakam

  7. Tindivanam

  8. Viluppuram (Terminus)

There is also a proposed branch connecting Tindivanam to Puducherry and Cuddalore.

As its an earlier stage, further process are required to complete the project and there will be timelines for the same. There are land acquistions pending, state, government funding are required. as of now its an proposal in place.
