Tamil Nadu’s Push for an All-AC Bus Future: A Smart Move for Passengers and the Environment

Tamil Nadu is taking a bold step towards improving public transport by prioritizing air-conditioned buses for future procurement. According to Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wants every passenger in the state to travel comfortably in AC buses. As a result, the government plans to procure only AC buses in the coming years, marking a significant shift in the way public transport services are delivered.

The decision comes at a time when electric mobility is proving to be both economically and environmentally beneficial. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has already introduced electric buses supplied by Switch Mobility, and operational data shows that these vehicles are substantially cheaper to run than conventional diesel buses.

The operating cost of a diesel bus is estimated at around ₹116 per kilometre. In comparison, a non-AC electric bus costs approximately ₹77.16 per kilometre to operate, while an AC electric bus costs about ₹80.86 per kilometre. Even with air-conditioning, electric buses are significantly more economical, delivering cost savings of roughly 30 to 35 percent compared to diesel-powered vehicles.

These savings are important for public transport agencies that face rising fuel and maintenance expenses. Lower operating costs can help transport corporations improve financial sustainability while continuing to expand and modernize their services. The reduced expenditure on daily operations also creates opportunities for reinvestment in better infrastructure, fleet expansion, and passenger amenities.

Beyond economics, electric AC buses offer several advantages to commuters. They provide a quieter and smoother travel experience, especially in crowded urban areas. Air-conditioned buses also make public transport more attractive during Tamil Nadu’s hot and humid weather conditions, encouraging more people to choose buses over private vehicles.

Environmental benefits further strengthen the case for electric buses. With zero tailpipe emissions, electric vehicles contribute to cleaner air and reduced pollution in cities.
