Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the public transit metro rail system is shutdown due to COVID19 restrictions with effect from 23rd March 2020. The Chennai Metro Rail System widely used by public for general transit and faster reachability.

The patronage towards Chennai Metro is in standstill as the restriction still continues even in lockdown unlock 3 announced by the central government. There was no announcement from Central Government on restrictions towards public road transportation services.
Earlier India Railways have announced they will resume the standard operation with effect from 15th August 2020. At present even the special train services operated by Southern Railways is standstill upto 31st July ’20 which has been extended from 14th July ’20.
Being a public transportation in Metropolitan areas of Chennai, Chennai Metro Railways is a key booster for economy of Chennai. The suburban trains operated by Southern Railway is also in standstill due to COVID19 restrictions.
